On a superficial mainstream level, the mid-1970s may appear as one of the music scene’s less exciting eras, dominated as it was by industry-approved repetition of tired formulas. On the regional and local levels however, the situation was different and more exciting. Live music still dominated in clubs, bars and lounges, and thousands of working bands made a living playing gigs on their regional circuits. The traditional model of mimicking recent Top 40 hits had given way to a more complex challenge for club bands, who were now expected to handle a melting pot of sounds that emerged out of the creative explosion of the late ‘60s. One of the more intriguing works to emerge from this next step progression came from a Colorado-based outfit called SATURN, who released a self-titled album in 1978. Intended more as a showcase for Saturn’s talents than a genuine commercial release, the record is now extremely rare and within its grooves dwell outstanding numbers with a rare, magical atmosphere. Its standing as a favorite genre-transcending cult record from the American mid-‘70samong aficionados of underground music is relatively new. 1970s Rhinestone Rock featuring an expressive disco-influenced female vocalist and a male songwriter-keyboardist. Saturn invokes powerful visions of overdressed ‘70s Friday night couples dancing the New York Hustle under mirrored balls in secondary downtown velvet sofa nightclubs decorated with huge zodiac signs and day-glow wall- paintings of big city skylines. Pro-level playing, driving keyboard arrangements and adept, eclectic songwriting as well as sideshow undertones of occult and science fiction. The wider cult appreciation for Saturn has been held back by the simple fact that very few copies of the original album have ever turned up; even today, only 4-5 copies are known to exist. With the advent of this reissue, the world can finally discover the ruby-studded magic of Saturn.
